The second Hermetic principle is called Correspondence.
As above, so below; as below, so above. As within, so without; as without, so within.
The principle derives from the Emerald Tablet, one of the most compressed documents in the Western esoteric tradition. The full text runs to roughly two hundred words. Attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the Tablet claims to encode the complete operation of reality in a single transmission.
The Kybalion states the principle this way. As above, so below; as below, so above. This principle embodies the truth that there is always a correspondence between the laws and phenomena of the various planes of being and life.
Above designates the level of principle, the organizing intelligence from which any particular form derives. The causal level. The upstream source generating the downstream expression.
Below designates the level of manifestation, the particular form through which the organizing principle expresses. The effect level. The downstream expression of the upstream cause.
Within designates the inner level of individual experience. The organizing principle operating inside consciousness, generating belief, orientation, and the templates through which reality is experienced.
Without designates the outer level of material circumstance. The physical world expresses what the inner level is generating.
The principle establishes that these registers operate by identical laws because all derive from the same organizing source. The law governing the cosmic scale governs the personal scale. The law governing the inner level governs the outer level. Correspondence is the structural relationship between every level of reality, an identity of law across all expressions of the same organizing intelligence.
The Tablet adds a fifth dimension to the standard formulation. It ascends from form to formless and descends again from formless to form, receiving the power of above and below. The correspondence moves. The organizing intelligence moves continuously from principle toward manifestation and from manifestation back toward principle, generating reality through that continuous movement.
The mechanism underneath Correspondence follows directly from Mentalism.
All is mind means reality is the expression of a single organizing intelligence at multiple levels simultaneously. Those levels operate by identical laws because they are the same intelligence in different degrees of expression. The same source generating every level means the same organizing principle operating at every level. Different scales of expression; identical structural laws across all of them.
This produces a specific and verifiable consequence.
Any level of the architecture is readable through any other level. The cosmic scale and the personal scale operate by identical laws because both are expressions of the same organizing intelligence. Understanding the law at one scale produces understanding of every scale. The personal is a complete map of the cosmic. The cosmic is fully present in the personal.
The within and without relationship is where the principle carries its most immediate operational weight.
The organizing principle at the inner level generates the expression at the outer level. The within is upstream from the without in the generative sequence Mentalism established. Belief templates at the inner level generate material circumstances at the outer level. The outer circumstance is the correspondence of the inner organizing principle, expressing at the gross level what the inner level is generating at the subtle level.
The correspondence runs in both directions simultaneously. The above generates the below; the below reflects the above. The within generates the without; the without reflects the within. Both directions are active continuously. The outer circumstance is downstream from the inner organizing principle and simultaneously reflects what that organizing principle is running.
This makes the outer level readable as information about the inner level. The material circumstances expressing at the without are the correspondence of whatever is organizing at the within. Reading the without accurately produces access to information about the inner level that direct introspection alone cannot always supply. The outer is showing what the inner is generating whether or not the inner level is aware of what it is generating.
The principle is self-confirming at every scale it is applied to. The same law operating in the motion of galaxies operates in the motion of subatomic particles. The same law operating in the development of civilizations operates in the development of individual lives. The same law operating in the relationship between cosmic source and physical universe operates in the relationship between individual belief and individual circumstance.
One law. Every scale. Identical operation throughout.
These words circulate through popular culture as decoration. Jewelry, tattoos, album titles, casual references. The recognition they generate is genuine; something responds to them before the explanation arrives. The decoration is everywhere. The understanding of what is being recognized is rare.
What is being recognized is the principle operating in one’s own experience.
Every person who has noticed that outer circumstances reflect inner states has encountered Correspondence directly. A period of inner clarity generates outer coherence. The period of inner confusion generating outer friction. The relationship between what is organizing at the inner level and what is manifesting at the outer level, consistent enough across a lifetime to exceed coincidence.
Every person who has recognized the same pattern operating at vastly different scales has encountered Correspondence directly. The same dynamic playing out in a personal relationship and in a historical civilization. The same structural movement visible in the development of an idea and in the development of a culture. The fractal quality of experience, the same law showing up at every scale of observation, is the principle operating visibly enough to be noticed.
The recognition precedes the explanation because the structure is already known at a level beneath language. Correspondence is the operating principle of reality encountering a description of itself through the individual mind that is its expression.
As above, so below means the organizing intelligence generating the cosmos is the same organizing intelligence generating the individual life reading those words. The cosmic and the personal are the same law at different scales of the same expression.
As within, so without means the inner level and the outer level are two registers of the same organizing intelligence. Shift the within; the without corresponds. The outer world is the inner life expressed at the level of material circumstance, the corporeal.
