1926 Notes on Democracy. H.L. Mencken American journalist, critic, satirist. Democracy doesn’t fail because of bad leaders. It fails because of what people actually want from it. Democratic man doesn’t want truth. Wants comfort. Politicians who tell truth: Lose. Voters reject them. Politicians who flatter: Win. Voters reward them. This isn’t corruption. This is the system working as designed. Second observation: Democracy elevates mediocrity by design. Not by accident. The exceptional person threatens the average. Makes them feel inadequate. The majority selects people like themselves. Relatability over competence. Mencken called them ‘the booboisie.’ Not an insult. Observation. The average person is easily deceived. Why? Because they want to be deceived. Comfortable lies beat uncomfortable truths. Every time. Third insight: The demagogue isn’t aberration. He’s democracy’s natural product. He tells people what they want to hear. Flatters their prejudices. Confirms their superiority. Democracy rewards this. Punishes the truth-teller. Mencken’s most famous line: ‘Democracy is the theory that the common people know what they want, and deserve to get it good and hard.'” Democracy fails when corrupted by bad actors. Good democracy requires educated voters and honest leaders. The system is pure, humans corrupt it. Mencken reveals: Democracy reveals what humans actually value. The system isn’t corrupted. It’s working. Showing us what we choose when given a choice. Three shifts: First: People don’t want competence. They want someone who makes them feel good about themselves. Not a better leader. More flattering leader. Democracy delivers what’s desired. Second: Excellence is threatening. The superior person is reproach to mediocrity. The crowd doesn’t elevate the exceptional. It pulls them down. Third: The demagogue isn’t a bug. He’s A feature. Democracy creates demand for flattery. Demagogue supplies it. Market forces. Not moral failing. Predictable outcome. What gets rewarded politically: Not truth. Not competence. Not long-term thinking. Flattery. Simplification. Confirmation of existing beliefs. Voters punish politicians who challenge them. Reward politicians who comfort them. Democracy IS working exactly as designed. Revealing what people actually want. The elevation of mediocrity: Exceptional candidates lose. Why? They make average people feel inadequate. Relatability wins. ‘Someone like us.’ Not someone better. Someone similar. The demagogue as natural selection: Environment creates selection pressure. Democracy creates demand for flattery. Demagogue supplies it. Thrives. Reproduces. Evolutionary success. System rewarding what system values. Want a different outcome? Change what system rewards. Comfortable lies versus uncomfortable truths: Every election demonstrates. Candidate offering difficult truth: Loses. Candidate offering comfortable lie: Wins. Not because voters are stupid. Because humans prefer comfort. Democracy gives people what they want. Then they get it. Good and hard. Mencken wrote this 100 years ago. Nothing has changed. Because he wasn’t describing a temporary condition. He was describing democracy revealing human nature. What people choose when given a choice. The system is working. Showing us ourselves.
