Natural drift: how evolution works without direction, without purpose, without progress. Structural coupling creates change over generations without guiding toward a predetermined goal.
Natural drift describes evolutionary change as a consequence of structural coupling between lineages and their environments. No selection pressure pushing toward optimal forms. No purpose driving improvement. Just structural changes that maintain autopoiesis through coupling history.
Organisms structurally couple with the environment across generations. Changes occur. Some changes maintain autopoiesis in the current environment. Those lineages continue. Some changes don’t maintain autopoiesis. Those lineages end.
The environment doesn’t select better organisms. The environment provides conditions. Organisms either maintain autopoiesis in those conditions or they don’t. Many different structural configurations can maintain autopoiesis in the same environment.
This creates drift, random walk through possibility space constrained only by requirement to maintain autopoiesis. No optimization. No improvement. No progress toward complexity.
What looks like adaptation from outside is continued autopoiesis from inside. The organism isn’t trying to fit the environment. The organism is maintaining its organization through whatever structural changes preserve coupling.
Natural drift removes teleology from evolution.
Standard view: environment poses challenges, organisms evolve solutions, fittest survive, evolution progresses toward better adapted forms.
Natural drift: organisms maintain autopoiesis or don’t. Multiple structural configurations work. Evolution explores this space through random structural variation.
Example: Eye evolution. Standard explanation, selection pressure for better vision drove incremental improvements toward optimal design. Natural drift explanation, various structural configurations maintained autopoiesis while allowing light detection. Multiple pathways, multiple solutions, all adequate for continued coupling. No optimal eye. Many workable eyes.
This explains convergent evolution without assuming purpose. Similar environmental conditions couple with different lineages. The coupling constrains which structural variations maintain autopoiesis. Similar structures emerge not because they’re optimal but because they’re among many adequate configurations for that coupling.
Extinction isn’t failure. It’s the cessation of autopoiesis when structural changes don’t preserve coupling with the current environment. Organisms whose current structure doesn’t maintain autopoiesis in current conditions.
If evolution is natural drift without purpose:
No species is more evolved than another. Bacteria aren’t primitive humans-in-waiting. They’re successful autopoietic systems maintaining coupling with their environments for billions of years. Complexity isn’t advancement. It’s one possible configuration among many.
Adaptation isn’t optimization. Organisms don’t become perfectly fitted to environments. They become adequate enough to maintain autopoiesis. Many adequate solutions exist. What exists now isn’t the best possible, just possible enough.
The future is genuinely open. No direction toward which evolution heads. No progress to measure. Only structural variation and continued autopoiesis creating whatever comes next without predetermined path.
Recognition: This applies beyond biological evolution. Cultural drift, organizational change, technological development, all can operate through natural drift. Change without purpose. Variation without optimization. Continued existence sufficient explanation for what persists.
Natural drift: structural change constrained only by maintaining autopoiesis. No purpose. No progress. No optimization toward a goal.
Evolution as a random walk through adequacy space. Life continues or doesn’t.
